Manchester United could have to sell some of their academy stars again next summer to ensure they remain within the profit and sustainability (PSR) limit.
That is the view of former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider Man United are already “close to the edge” in terms of PSR following their staff redundancies and their managerial change.
United’s first-quarter accounts ending 30 September revealed their overall revenue fell to £143.1million down from £157.1million for the same period last year.
The Premier League giants noted an exceptional cost of £8.6million in their accounts, which they said “comprises costs incurred in relation to the restructuring of the group’s operations, including the redundancy scheme implemented in the first quarter of financial year 2025”.
United have decided to part ways with Erik ten Hag and appoint Ruben Amorim as their new manager since the end of the first quarter.
It has been revealed the club paid £10.4million to pay off Ten Hag and his backroom staff, while Sporting Lisbon received £11million in compensation for Amorim and his coaching team.
Scott McTominay and Mason Greenwood were sold to Napoli and Marseille during the summer transfer window for more than £50million to strengthen the club’s PSR situation, with top-flight sides only permitted to make £105million of losses over a rolling three-year period.
Man United are close to PSR limit after exceptional expenses
Borson admitted United will likely have to make some similar transactions again next summer.
He told Football Insider: “On the cost side, it’s quite materially worse when you look at the PSR test.
“United did have a decent buffer going into this year because of one of the historic years that they lost and because they have had various allowances over time.
“But I think a lot of that buffer has been eaten up now by the change of manager and the redundancy costs.
“We will have to see. I suspect they won’t be doing a lot in the January window, if anything.
“If they can get to the end of the year and sell again like they did last summer, where they sold youth players Greenwood and McTominay, they can put themselves in a better position from a PSR perspective if they can do that next summer.
“But they are quite close to the edge on PSR for the current season because of the roughly £30million they have spent so far on exceptional expenses that they wouldn’t have necessarily budgeted for.”
