Manchester United are facing a “big” issue due to the lack of prize money available in the Europa League this season.
That is the view of former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the Premier League giants need to win the second-tier European competition just to receive £25million.
Man United earned a place in the Europa League following their unexpected FA Cup final victory over Manchester City last season.
But Erik ten Hag’s side drew 1-1 against FC Twente in their first group stage game at Old Trafford.
Although Uefa’s competition revamp has seen an increase in prize money for clubs competing in Europe, the Europa League is worth far less than the riches on offer in the Champions League.
Man United need to win Europa League to make money
Borson insisted United will have to progress to the latter stages of the competition if they want to make a significant amount of money.
“From a financial perspective, United are in some ways in a strong position,” Borson told Football Insider.
“Those home games are lucrative where you have a stadium the size of United’s and their fanbase.
“You are generating money from the gate receipts the more games you have as opposed to the prize money.
“But the prize money is a big issue for United. If you were to look at the new cycle in the Europa League, United’s prize money against FC Twente was £125,000.
“That’s what you get for a draw in the Europa League now and we all know that is basically nothing.
“You get five times that in the Champions League for a draw. Even to get £25million in the Europa League, you need to win it.
“Just to put that £25million into some sort of perspective, that’s pretty much the minimum you would get in the Champions League.
“You get the best part of two-thirds of that just by qualifying for the Champions League.
“To make proper money from the Europa League, they will need to get into the very latter stages of it, so drawing a home game is problematic.”
