Stefan Borson: Newcastle could be abiout to sell long-serving stars

Newcastle United could boost their summer spending power by selling some of their younger players or more experienced campaigners.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider selling someone who’s been at the club for a long time would allow Newcastle more leeway because those players won’t have any book value remaining after it’s already been amortised off.

The north-east giants have already secured the permanent signings of Lewis Hall, Odysseas Vlachodimos, Lloyd Kelly and John Ruddy this summer, while Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson have been sold in big-money deals.

Eddie Howe’s side could have scope to make more new signings this summer as their £70.7million loss in 2021-22, which was PIF’s first campaign in charge at St James’ Park, is set to drop out of their PSR calculations next season.

Newcastle to have more leeway in transfer market

Although Borson doesn’t expect Newcastle to “go crazy” in the transfer market, he believes they will have more leeway than last season.

“The year that’s dropped off in the rolling three-year period was a bad year for them,” Borson told Football Insider.

“That means they do have more leeway this year.

“But they have been very clear that they were very close to breaching for 2023-24. Darren Eales gave an interview last week where he explained how close they were.

“I wouldn’t expect them to go crazy. I think a lot of the talk is quite wishful thinking in terms of the spending that’s necessary.

“But with any of these teams, the key will be what they can bring in.

“If they can sell players who have effectively got a net book value of zero, either being young players or more experienced players who have been at the club for a long time and don’t have any book value remaining because it’s all been amortised off, then that would give them more leeway.”

In other news, Newcastle could now accept bids for attacker.
