Leeds Exclusive: Surprise Wilfried Gnonto update tonight

Wilfried Gnonto is expected to start the season with Leeds United despite links to a move away from Elland Road this summer.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that deals for both Gnonto and Crysencio Summerville will prove complicated and lengthy, with no imminent move lined up.

This comes shortly after Football Insider revealed that Everton are still plotting a move to sign the winger, but question marks remain over whether they can match his asking price.

Gnonto, 20, has been strongly linked with a transfer for over 12 months and went on strike this time last year to engineer a move.

It will be seen as a surprise in many quarters that he is still at Leeds and likely to start the new season for them.

Gnonto has been a long-term target at Goodison Park after they failed to sign him last summer, with Sean Dyche still looking to improve in the wide areas.

Following the arrival of Jesper Lindstrom, the club has now turned their attention to Leeds’ star, but no progress has been made on the deal yet.

Gnonto joined Leeds from FC Zurich in 2022 in a deal worth £3.8million, and he has since gone on to make 72 appearances for the club.

However, since their relegation from the Premier League in 2023, the winger has been heavily linked with a move away from the club.

Everton have been the most active party in the race for his signature, while he has also been linked with a move back to Italy where he began his career with Inter Milan.

Last season, Gnonto featured 44 times under Daniel Farke, scoring nine goals and providing three assists as he became a key fixture in the second half of the season.

That form has done little to deter interest from the likes of Everton.

The Championship season begins in just under two weeks, on Friday 9 August, with Gnonto expected to be part of Farke’s squad for their opening clash.

Any deal for the winger to leave Elland Road is likely to take place towards the end of the window given the fees involved and Leeds’ desire to keep him at the club.
