Everton staff members were left worried about Seamus Coleman’s health following an incident in the Toffees’ 3-0 pre-season loss against Coventry City on Tuesday night (30 July).
At one point during the game, the experienced Irishman fell to the ground following a physical challenge before staying down, visibly in a lot of pain.
However, despite the worrying scenes in the first half, the 35-year-old came out for the second 45 minutes seemingly unhurt.
Speaking on Sky Sports News during the match (30 July, 20:38), reporter Vinny O’Connor said: “There was a worrying moment just now when Seamus Coleman hit the deck. It was after a physical tussle with Ephron Mason-Clark.
“The reason it was worrying is because Coleman was laying on his front and started beating the floor with his hand.
“He seemed in an awful lot of pain. His right knee needed treatment, but he picked himself up and finished the half. Given his injury problems, it was a worry for the Everton bench.
“Plus he took a whack to his Achilles, but he does seem to be alright.”
Seamus Coleman is more than just a player at Everton
Jake O’Brien’s move to Everton shows that Coleman is more than just a player for the club. The 23-year-old Irish defender picked Everton over several other Premier League teams because of Coleman’s influence [The Guardian, 30 July].
O’Brien’s transfer from Lyon for £17million shows the Toffees’ focus on developing young talent. Dyche’s record with young defenders also played a big role. O’Brien said he hopes to follow in the footsteps of Jarrad Branthwaite, who has done well under Dyche.
But it’s Coleman’s impact that really stands out. O’Brien, who made his debut for Ireland with Coleman, said Coleman is a top guy and a brilliant captain. Coleman encouraged O’Brien to join Everton, showing that his leadership goes beyond the field.
Coleman still has his own part to play at Goodison Park, though, and his involvement during pre-season suggests he will have what will likely be a final swansong in 2024-25.
This incident on a disappointing night against Coventry was thankfully nothing too serious, but it does highlight that the long-serving defender is more willing than anyone to put himself through the wars.
