Chris Beesley believes Rafa Benitez was the “most controversial” manager appointment made by Everton in the club’s history.
The Spaniard was appointed at Goodison Park in June 2021 to replace the departing Carlo Ancelotti, who returned to Real Madrid after 17 months in charge, though Benitez did not last any longer.
In fact, the 64-year-old only lasted seven months on Merseyside before being sacked by Farhad Moshiri, with the passionate fanbase making their feelings clear on the former Liverpool manager.
Writing via the Liverpool Echo [21 November], Beesley said: “The luckiest manager was Rafael Benitez, given that he was a former Liverpool manager. For Farhad Moshiri to make the most controversial appointment in the history of the most passionate football city in the country.
He wasn’t any old Liverpool manager, I don’t think there would have been the same sort of uproar if it had been Brendan Rodgers, no matter what you might think of his abilities.
“It was the fact that it was a manager who had petulantly described Everton as “a small club” after a goalless draw in a Merseyside Derby at Anfield.
“I’d say the unluckiest Everton manager was Carlo Ancelotti, because most of his reign ended up behind closed doors because of the global coronavirus pandemic, so it was a strange environment.”
Farhad Moshiri makes another big mistake at Everton
Moshiri is often an unpopular figure amongst the fans at Goodison Park, and the decision to bring Benitez to the club was likely one of his biggest mistakes.
The Spaniard spent six years with the Toffees’ biggest rivals at Anfield, even aiming digs at the club during matches between the two rivals, which made the move all the more controversial.
With the number of controversial decisions that the current owner has made during his time on Merseyside, it should really have come as no surprise to the fans to make one such as this.
Supporters can be hard to please though, with Sean Dyche currently facing a lot of pressure due to the Toffees’ form in the Premier League, but it does seem like Moshiri is going to take any action right now.
While the Friedkin Group could take a very different avenue with their manager decisions, the new takeover has not yet been completed so Dyche is expected to remain in the role for now.
