Manchester United have spent an “incredible” amount of money on sacking managers over the past few years following the departure of Erik ten Hag.
That is the view of former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider it is particularly important this time around after they were close to the profit and sustainability (PSR) limit last season.
The Athletic reported on 30 October sacking Ten Hag will cost Man United around £15million in compensation after he only penned a 12-month extension in July, taking his deal up until June 2026.
Ruben Amorim was appointed as the Dutchman’s successor on 1 November after Old Trafford chiefs agreed to pay Sporting Lisbon £9.25million in compensation.
The Portuguese, who will make the move to Manchester on 11 November, is the club’s sixth permanent manager since Sir Alex Ferguson’s 26-year reign ended with his retirement in 2013.
United are believed to have paid around £70million in compensation to former managers since the Scotsman’s exit 11 years ago.
Man United exceptional costs are important after PSR issues
“They have had historically quite a lot of exceptional termination costs over the years as they have had to get rid of quite a lot of managers,” Borson told Football Insider.
“The compensation amounts are incredible on some of these.
“Rangnick, who was only a temporary manager, was something like £15million to depart.
“Solskjaer and his team were another £10million.
“This is almost something United have had to deal with every three years since Sir Alex Ferguson left.
“It is quite important this time around because we know that they were close to the PSR limit last season.”
