Manchester United’s ticket prices could soon be unrecognisable for the club’s supporters after the recent price hike.

That is the view of former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the important factor is the compounding of those ticket prices over several years rather than the initial increase.

Man United fans resorted to protest outside Old Trafford earlier this month following a controversial decision to raise ticket prices to £66 per game with no concessionary discounts for seniors or children.

United said the ticket price increases are part of the club’s aim to put themselves on a “stronger financial footing”.

The Telegraph reported on 5 December two-thirds of supporters are “unhappy” with Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the Glazers’ running of the club.

Ratcliffe has been looking for ways to cut costs and increase the Manchester giants’ revenue since he bought a 27.7 per cent stake at Old Trafford in February.

Man United ticket price increase to deliver profit

Borson revealed every club is soon going to come under fire for ticket price increases.

He told Football Insider: “If you can generate more money from matchday, it clearly makes a difference.

“Any increase that you have should go straight to the bottom line as profit versus the existing prices.

“But more importantly with ticket prices and it’s the thing that most people don’t focus on for understandable reasons, but it’s about the compounding of that increase over time.

“When people look at a ticket increase of five per cent per annum on ticket prices, for example, it’s not so much the five per cent extra they are going to get for that particular year, but it’s compounded in every year that it goes on.

“Clearly, then next year when you also add five per cent, it’s five per cent on the increased amount, so you have added five per cent last year, five per cent next year and the year after.

“The compounding of that increase starts to have very material impacts, such that by the time you get to year 10 the ticket prices are unrecognisable from what it was seven or eight years ago.

“It’s about compounding, and every club is going to have criticism for it.”
