Stefan Borson taken aback by 'remarkable' Chelsea situation

Chelsea’s lack of a front-of-shirt sponsorship deal for next season shows the Premier League is failing to attract lucrative offers from blue-chip brands.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider it’s “remarkable” the West Londoners don’t have a shirt deal lined up with the start of the new season just weeks away.

Chelsea are at risk of starting next season with no front-of-shirt sponsor for a second successive campaign after their deal with Infinite Athlete has expired.

In September last year – two months into the season – the London giants struck a £40million per season deal with the US-based sports data company.

But under the agreement, Infinite Athlete is set to transition to a sleeve sponsorship deal for next season, leaving Chelsea searching around for a new deal.

Chelsea lack of shirt deal highlights Premier League issue

Borson revealed there hasn’t been much movement in terms of blue-chip brands signing up to shirt sponsorship deals with Premier League clubs in recent years.

He told Football Insider: “It’s a big issue for Chelsea to not have a shirt sponsor when those deals are one of the largest items on a club’s profit and loss account every year.

“For Chelsea, it’s something that should be worth between £40-50million a season by the time you have taken everything into account.

“To not have one is pretty remarkable and doesn’t say much for the state of the Premier League’s attractiveness to blue-chip brands.

“We haven’t had much movement in terms of top-quality brands coming in.

“There doesn’t seem to be too many brands that want to get the exposure from Premier League front-of-shirt deals for whatever reason.

“Maybe it’s just that it’s become so expensive to do.”
