Keith Jackson has told Rangers they would be “better off avoiding” Dave King after recent developments at Ibrox this season.
The former Gers chairman has revealed that he is open to a return and would be ready to help rebuild the Light Blues over the next two years after John Bennett stepped down from his role [Chris Jack, 15 September].
While King has made his stance clear, Daily Record journalist Jackson insists that appointing the South African-based business for a second time would be a “regression” for the Light Blues.
Writing for the Daily Record on Monday (16 September) he said: “The South Africa-based businessman has thrown his hat into the ring for a second term in the top office but Rangers might be better to thank him for his offer and quickly dismiss the idea as a step backwards in the wrong direction.
“King might claim to have a plan to make Rangers great again but if that means returning to the days when he would start a fight in an empty Blue Room, then it’ll be a regression the club would be better off avoiding.
“That he himself stood down following a bitter fall-out with his successor, Douglas Park points to the residual bad blood which caused Bennett so many difficulties in his attempts to bring various boardroom factions together.
“Now that the peacemaker has been forced to throw in the towel, if King and Park are put back on a collision course the collateral damage could be spectacular and, let’s face it, over the last 13 years Rangers have had quite enough of these ego fuelled sideshows and circuses.”
Will Rangers appoint Dave King after John Bennett Ibrox exit?
Rangers need a new chairman and CEO in the coming weeks and in an ideal world, both appointments would be made swiftly so that attention can turn back to on-the-field matters rather than off-the-pitch issues.
However, the Light Blues cannot afford to get this appointment wrong as they look to close the gap to their Old Firm rivals. If the Gers genuinely want to overthrow the Hoops, they need to get their house in order.
Whether or not King would be the right man to make those changes is open to debate. As Jackson suggests, he caused a lot of fractions in the boardroom in his first spell and returning to that would be a step backwards.
But if his appointment saw further investment into Ibrox and helped the Light Blues become more competitive off and on the pitch, maybe it could be a risk worth taking. The decision-makers in Glasgow have some big calls to make.
