Philippe Clement is not likely to be at risk of the sack if Rangers lose to Aberdeen, according to Stevie Clifford.
The Light Blues travel to Pittodrie on Wednesday (30 October) night as they look to close the gap to both Celtic and Jimmy Thelin’s Dons at the top of the Scottish Premiership table.
While some have suggested a defeat to Aberdeen could cost the Belgian his job at Ibrox [Chris Sutton, 21 October] Four Lads host Clifford doesn’t think the Ibrox board will be in any rush to make a change in the dugout.
Speaking on The Rangers Review YouTube channel (30 October, 2:25) he said: “I think this is defining.
“Do I think it could lead to Philippe Clement getting sacked? No. I think it could lead to that discussion starting again and I think that’s exactly what will happen again because the pressure from certain areas of the support will be that.
“But there might be a reluctance from the board members because of their current situation to go down that route again and plus, the inevitable £5million estimate that we would probably have to pay to relieve the management team of their duties and get somebody else in.
“We’re not going to want to pay that.”
Will Rangers sack Philippe Clement amid Ibrox exit speculation?
It does seem as though it would be a strange call from the Gers bard to sack Clement when there is such little structure above the Belgian at Ibrox currently.
The 50-year-old is the only permanent figurehead at the football club currently with no permanent CEO and no permanent chairman in position, despite the fact both positions have now been open for months on end.
It would be a brave call on temporary chairman John Gilligan’s part to make a change in the dugout at this stage. Even if fans were to begin calling for Clement’s sacking, the Belgian would almost certainly remain in post.
Hopefully, the Gers will manage to pick up a result at Pittodrie and put this entire discussion to bed before it has even really got going.
A win against the Dons would silence the critics, even if only temporarily, and buy Clement and the board above him some time to get their house in order.
