'Strange' - King surprised as Man City hijack US transfer for Tottenham gem

Bryan King is surprised that Han Willhoft-King agreed to join Manchester City after leaving Tottenham.

The ex-Spurs scout claims the teenager likely feels as though he can learn more from Pep Guardiola than he can from Ange Postecoglou.

Alan Nixon has reported via his Patreon (8 September), that City swooped to sign Willhoft-King, who was set to accept a scholarship at UCLA after leaving Tottenham.

John Wenham previously exclusively revealed to Tottenham News (14 June) that Willhoft-King rejected a new contract offer from Spurs before his departure was confirmed by the club (4 June).

And King – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – is surprised by this recent turn of events.

“That sounds a strange one to me,” King said.

“Again, it all depends on what players they had above this kid, playing both in the Under-21s and for the first-team.

“Were his chances limited at Tottenham? I would have thought they’d be limited at Manchester City. However, he obviously feels he can learn more from Guardiola than he can from Postecoglou.”

Willhoft-King was offered a new contract which he turned down. Therefore, it is clear that Tottenham wanted to keep hold of him.

He is now set for the opportunity to show his worth with Manchester City, and in some ways, the player is likely to feel as though he has upgraded.

If he goes on to be a success, Postecoglou will no doubt feel disappointed that Spurs weren’t able to keep hold of the midfielder.

However, Willhoft-King never made much of an impact at first-team level in North London, and opportunities are likely to be just as difficult, if not more, to come by at Manchester City.

Therefore, only time will tell if the 18-year-old made the right decision.
