'No point' - Pundit View: Tottenham loanee could be recalled in January as 'Problem' emerges

Paul Robinson believes Tottenham will recall Dane Scarlett from his Oxford United loan spell unless he can break into the starting XI.

The 20-year-old has joined the Championship side but has failed to make the desired impact, playing just one minute of league football so far.

Despite being handed a start in the 1-0 defeat to Coventry City in the EFL Cup, Robinson has given the youngster until the January transfer window to persuade Spurs that he can impress with The U’s.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Robinson said: “He needs to get in the side between now and January. That’s generally how long loans are given before the deal is cancelled and the player is returned to his parent club, going back out on loan elsewhere.

“The manager and the club obviously feel this is the best way forward for him to develop, but there is no point sending a player of his age and quality somewhere if he isn’t going to play.

“It’s up to him to get into the side, prove himself, and give Spurs a problem. He wants to give Tottenham a good problem, rather than him not playing and the club not knowing what to do with him.”

Spurs’ academy has created a plethora of exciting talents, especially in the attacking third of the pitch, including Mikey Moore, Will Lankshear and Scarlett himself.

Ange Postecoglou clearly feels there is not enough space for all of these at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with several young names being sent out on loan this summer.

Given how impressive Scarlett has been during his time at Tottenham, there was almost an expectation that he would hit the ground running on loan, though that has not been the case so far.

As Robinson says, the 20-year-old striker must find a way to break into Des Buckingham’s starting XI if he is to stay at the Kassam Stadium. With Mark Harris in form, though, that could be a difficult ask.
