'Strange' - Wenham baffled by Tottenham as Fabrizio Romano shares Newcastle transfer news today

John Wenham has questioned why Tottenham haven’t made a move to sign Lloyd Kelly.

The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose is surprised that the North London club haven’t made more of an effort to challenge Newcastle for the defender’s signature.

Fabrizio Romano wrote via X on Thursday (13 June), “Kelly has signed five-year contract as Newcastle player, deal 100% completed.”

Spurs have long been linked with an interest in the 25-year-old, having previously seen a £20million bid turned down by Bournemouth (The Athletic, 3 September 2023).

And Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – doesn’t understand why the club didn’t follow up on that interest this time around.

“Kelly looks set to join Newcastle on a free,” Wenham said.

“That was someone we previously offered £20million to sign so I’m surprised we’ve just watched on as that deal has happened.

“We seemingly didn’t challenge Newcastle for his signature, which is strange.”

Considering Spurs were willing to pay £20million less than a year ago, it does seem odd that they haven’t made much of an attempt to sign the same player for free.

Kelly is a versatile defender who can operate as both a left-back and as a centre-back, something which Ange Postecoglou would have appreciated.

Perhaps Spurs are focused on other targets at the moment, but they could live to regret this.

Allowing a long-standing transfer target to join a close rival for free, especially for a shrewd businessman such as Daniel Levy.
