Bryan King has called for supporters who aimed abuse at Tottenham forward Brennan Johnson to receive social media bans.
The ex-Spurs scout has branded those who have sent “nasty” messages toward the Welshman “social media cowards.”
Following Spurs’ 1-0 defeat to Arsenal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday (15 September) it emerged that Johnson had deactivated his Instagram profile (via TheSpursWatch on X, 15 September).
And King – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – has called for those who sent the forward abuse to be banned from social media.
“It is sad to see Johnson like this,” King said.
“The people who write these things are social media cowards. Afraid to confront the person in question. If you can’t put your real name up, and you have to hide behind a profile, then why write it?
“I don’t know the extent of what Johnson received. However, what he has received has obviously been nasty. You shouldn’t let it impact you, but it has impacted him, as any player would be impacted.
“It is unnecessary. These people should be banned from using social media. Johnson is a young player, he was a breath of fresh air when he first arrived.
“I wouldn’t even call these people real supporters. If they are, then they ought to support another club or get out of football altogether. I have no time for them.”
Brennan Johnson subject to abuse from Tottenham supporters
No matter how a player performs for their club, no supporter has the right to direct abuse at them online.
It is an incredibly cowardly thing to do, and once criticism goes beyond a player’s performance, a line has well and truly been crossed.
Johnson netted a stoppage-time winner as Spurs beat Coventry City 2-1 on Wednesday (18 September), albeit in rather fortuitous circumstances. However, his celebrations were muted, with Postecoglou supporting his player after the match (via BBC Sport, 19 September).
Seeing a player reluctant to celebrate with his own supporters after scoring a last-minute winner away from home is not a nice sight. Therefore, it seems as though a lot of so-called Tottenham “fans” need to take a long hard look at themselves.
In other Tottenham news, Ian Darke has been left baffled by a behind-the-scenes reluctance at the club.
