Liverpool will have to pay a premium to sign Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite ahead of the transfer deadline, according to Paul Hawksbee.

Rumours on social media had suggested that Arne Slot’s side were keen to sign the England international this summer after Manchester United saw two bids for his signature rejected earlier in the window [Liverpool Echo, 19 August].

While that speculation has been played down by David Ornstein [The Overlap, 22 August], talkSPORT host Hawksbee believes the Reds would have to pay a “tariff” to tempt the Toffees into selling to a rival.

Speaking on talkSPORT on Friday (23 August) he said: “Let’s have a talk about a move that doesn’t get done an awful lot, Liverpool to Everton or Everton to Liverpool.

“Branthwaite to Liverpool, what are the chances? I imagine there will be a Liverpool tariff.”

Will Jarrad Branthwaite exit Everton amid Liverpool transfer rumours?

Everton have already set a high asking price for Branthwaite this summer, but Hawksbee’s suggestion that their valuation would be even higher if Liverpool came knocking doesn’t seem too far-fetched.

It isn’t often that a player crosses the Stanley Park divide and while that seems unlikely to happen in the coming weeks, those in charge at Goodison Park will do everything they can to prevent it.

The current owners on the blue half of Merseyside aren’t exactly the most popular figures to start with, but if they were to sell one of the club’s most promising stars to their local rivals, there would be absolute bedlam.

Ultimately, it doesn’t seem as though the Toffees will have to make that difficult decision as it seems unlikely that Liverpool’s rumoured interest will develop past the initial social media speculation that has circled.

Hopefully, no other clubs come knocking for the defender’s signature between now and the end of August. If anyone is to meet Everton’s valuation, they’ll have a very tough decision to make.
