Everton “wouldn’t miss” Dominic Calvert-Lewin if he is sold ahead of the 30 August transfer deadline, according to Tony Cascarino.

The England international has been linked with a move away from Goodison Park this summer, with reports suggesting the Toffees could receive a last-minute bid for his services [Connor O’Neill, 23 August].

Although Sean Dyche is understood to be eager to keep the forward on Merseyside beyond the end of August, talkSPORT pundit Cascarino doesn’t believe he is versatile enough to lead the Blues’ line.

Speaking on talkSPORT on Saturday (24 August) he said: “Sean Dyche might look at it and if it’s the Calvert-Lewin that was seemingly a better player two or three years ago, then they would miss him.

“But if it’s the Calvert-Lewin of the last 18 months, no they wouldn’t miss him. He’s got to be more versatile as a player.

“I don’t know if he’s one of those players that is not durable enough. He never looks like he can play a lot of football to me Calvert-Lewin.”

Will Dominic Calvert-Lewin exit Everton amid Goodison Park transfer rumours?

While there have always been question marks over Calvert-Lewin’s fitness and adaptability, most Everton supporters would be in agreement that the England international is the best option Dyche has currently.

He isn’t perfect and in an ideal world the Toffees would have more competition at the top end of the pitch, but he is still the Blues’ most consistent source of goals at Goodison Park.

Of course, Everton will have a decision to make if a late offer arrives for the striker as he enters the final year of his contract on Merseyside, but they will likely only sanction his exit if they can sign a replacement before the window slams shut.

There is already a genuine threat of relegation this season and that will only be amplified further if the Toffees head into the new season with Beto and Youseff Chermiti as their recognised senior strikers.

Cascarino’s assessment of the forward may be slightly harsh as well, given the complete lack of service Calvert-Lewin has had in the opening weeks of the campaign.
