Teen rejected new Tottenham contract offer before exit announcement - Lilywhite Rose

John Wenham has revealed that Han Willhoft-King turned down a new Tottenham contract before being released.

The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Liliywhite Rose has praised the 18-year-old’s bravery after his recent decision.

Willhoft-King was one of several players released by Tottenham earlier this month (5 June).

But Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – has revealed that the North London club didn’t want to lose the Under-18 midfielder.

“Willhoft-King was offered a new contract but decided to turn it down,” Wenham said.

“It is absolutely the correct decision for him. Tyrese Hall and George Abbott have both signed long-term deals, and he probably felt that the same pathway wasn’t available to him.

“He is going to try his luck elsewhere and good luck to him.

“This is a brave decision, he has chosen to turn down a contract in an attempt to make faster progress somewhere else. I wish him the best of luck with that.”

It will be interesting for supporters to discover that Willhoft-King turned down a new deal.

The fact that he was offered a contract suggests the club did value the player.

However, Willhoft-King himself clearly felt that there weren’t enough opportunities for him in North London.

This is something Ange Postecoglou must therefore look to address.

When supporters read that an Under-18 player had been released, they would have likely assumed it was on the club’s terms.

However, this sounds like it was a decision made by the player, and Postecoglou will want to avoid more talented youngsters walking away from Hotspur Way.
