Ten Hag sack latest: Two confirmed twists are Man United game-changers

Man United manager Erik ten Hag is in a stronger position after the international break, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that England’s appointment of 51-year-old Thomas Tuchel, coupled with Gareth Southgate’s announcement of taking a break from management, has disrupted Man United’s plans to replace Erik ten Hag, 54.

Both Tuchel and Southgate, 54, had been heavily linked with the Man United job after Ten Hag’s dismal start to the season.

It’s understood the Dutchman remains in a precarious position after leading Man United to their worst-ever start to a Premier League season and their next game against Brentford is pivotal.

Tuchel officially took the England reigns on Wednesday (October 16), putting pen to paper on an 18-month deal that will see him lead the team at the 2026 World Cup.

Southgate, his predecessor, has ruled out a return to coaching for at least a year after stepping down following England’s 2-1 defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.

Erik ten Hag still under pressure at Man United

Ten Hag’s hand may have been somewhat strengthened but he remains under immense pressure with Man United sitting in 14th with two wins, two draws, and three defeats from their opening seven league games.

The club’s hierarchy held several meetings in London about his future but ultimately decided to retain Ten Hag for the foreseeable future.

Ten Hag’s job has been further complicated by the club’s extensive injury list, with 10 first-team players currently sidelined.

Winless in their last five games across all competitions, Ten Hag has a mountain to climb if he’s to turn things around at the club.
