Dundee United manager Jim Goodwin is taking inspiration from Hearts on how to snatch a result from Rangers this weekend.

Philippe Clement takes his Gers side north to Tannadice in desperate search of a return to winning ways, already sitting five points below Celtic at this early stage of the season.

Goodwin says he has looked to study Hearts this week and how they closed off opportunities for Clement’s side on the opening weekend, as the clash finished in a goalless draw at Tynecastle.

As quoted in the Daily Record [13 September], the Tangerines boss said: “Sunday is going to be a tough test, with Rangers coming off the Celtic game.

“Prior to that, they hadn’t lost a game domestically. Hearts ran them close in the first game and we have to look to that.

“I remember watching it back and Hearts really limited Rangers to any clear-cut chances. We have to study that and look to see what we can use to our advantage.”

Rangers now a more realistic scalp for opposition teams

While Rangers and Celtic always were and always will be the scalps to claim for Scotland’s clubs, the Gers are now in a vulnerable position not seen in the past few years.

This is a place the club are in whereby fellow competitors are viewing them as a realistic target to beat, and Dundee United will fancy their chances of nicking something at a buoyant Tannadice.

Goodwin is likely to set his side up defensively and insulate the team with a low block, judging by his comments on limiting the chances the Light Blues create.

Clement may shuffle his starting XI from the Old Firm and will instruct his team to dictate proceedings early and calm the crowd down – if Rangers score the opening goal, you would back them to go on and finish the job.

Should the hosts strike first blood, it could be a difficult day and that away stand will be a tricky one to approach come the final whistle.
