Lennon Miller’s time to move to a club like Rangers “will probably come” amid transfer links to Ibrox, but not yet, according to his father.
Lee Miller told Alison McConnell for PLZ Soccer on 3 September that the Motherwell midfielder does have “massive ambition” to play at the highest level, but for now there is “no rush” and he is focused on playing as many games as possible where he is.
The teenager started being linked to an Old Firm switch after impressive performances last season, and according to Football Scotland on 10 July the Light Blues sent representatives to watch him during preseason.
Miller senior said when asked about links to Rangers and Celtic (10m): “He’s not interested in going anywhere else right now in terms of he wants to rack up as many games as possible.
“Yeah, that time will probably come, and he wants to play at the highest level, Lennon. But I go through different scenarios with him all the time. ‘Think if this happened, this could happen’ in different situations. And he’s got ambition, he’s got massive ambition, he wants to be a Scottish international, play at the highest level.
“The way he’s going just now he will do that, but there’s no rush for that, and he understands that as well.”
Motherwell exit not imminent for Rangers target Lennon Miller
Philippe Clement could certainly use the help of the 18-year-old during a difficult start to the campaign but it doesn’t sound like Miller is leaving Fir Park for a while.
The defeat to Celtic in the first Old Firm derby of the campaign has also arguably highlighted the fact that if he wants to play at the highest level in Scotland the midfielder won’t be heading to Ibrox right now.
His development is probably best remaining under Stuart Kettlewell for the time being, but the past few months have demonstrated how the Light Blues barely have money to pay for a badly-needed overhaul now let alone to buy players to loan back to where they came from.
Connor Barron’s arrival from Aberdeen this summer should at least have woken the Ibrox hierarchy up to the fact that solid additions can be sourced from inside Scotland.
So if Miller is still available next summer then the question may be put on the table again, but for now he remains one of many who are currently out of reach.
In other Rangers news, the Light Blues may have banked a higher fee for a high-profile exit than first thought.
