Rangers couldn’t get Robin Propper off the pitch quick enough after a “terrible” performance against St. Mirren, Andy Halliday and Roger Hannah have said.
Speaking on the Clyde 1 Superscoreboard (28 October), Hannah and Halliday agreed that St. Mirren striker Toyosi Olusanya gave Propper the runaround before he was replaced on 61 minutes.
Philippe Clement’s side won the game 2-1 thanks to Vaclav Cerny’s goal eight minutes later, but the performance and Belgian’s post-match comments regarding Propper were slammed by the SSB panel.
Journalist Hannah said: “That’s nonsense what Philippe Clement talked about yesterday; these players needing time to settle in.
“Robin Propper’s 31, he’s played professional football for a dozen years – why does he need two months and more to settle in?”
Halliday agreed: “We’re talking about slow and uninspired and no intensity – sometimes that’s given when your centre-half’s not dealing with first balls, and Robin Propper never dealt with one.
“I thought Olusanya gave him an absolute torrent in the first 45 minutes.”
Hannah added: “When Olusanya took the ball off him on the byline, it was as quick as they could get him off the pitch, it was terrible.”
Robin Propper the biggest disappointment of all at Rangers
When it comes to defending players who need time to settle into life in Glasgow, Clement can be given a pass for mentioning several of his new signings over the summer of change he spearheaded at Ibrox.
The likes of Jefte, Clinton Nsiala, Hamza Igamane and Neraysho Kasanwirjo are all in their early twenties and have little experience in senior football, but those parameters do not apply to Propper.
A 31-year-old former FC Twente captain who played nine straight seasons in the Eredivisie, Propper is the oldest and most experienced of Clement’s new transfers this summer.
Signed to replace long-time stalwart Connor Goldson in central defence, who hoisted three trophies during his six seasons at Ibrox, Propper is yet to come close to bringing the same levels of influence.
Perhaps his form will improve in time, but so far Propper has been well below the levels expected of him, and it remains to be seen whether is the player whom the Gers can build their defence around.
In other Rangers news, one Ibrox youngster is set to make only his third Gers start in their must-win match against Aberdeen.
