Rangers have no leg to stand on with the “new squad” card at this stage of the season, according to Michael Gannon.
The Daily Record journalist, speaking on Record Sport’s Hotline [28 October], said the overhaul of the squad cannot be used as a reason for any lack of progress or poor results months down the line.
Gannon added that the clash against Aberdeen at Pittodrie on 30 October puts them up against another new-look squad which is thriving.
He said: “We’re getting to this stage of the season when it’s nearly November, and people are still saying players need to settle into the team.
“It doesn’t wash anymore. You can’t keep playing this card of new signings and players need to adjust to Scottish football. You don’t get that sort of luxury in Scotland.”
Rangers must deliver sooner rather than later, starting at Aberdeen
A win for Rangers at Pittodrie could act as the major turning point this season desperately needs, but Aberdeen will be full of belief.
To earn a point and at least limit the hosts would not be ideal but could be manageable, but a defeat would be disastrous and would cast serious doubts over Philippe Clement’s position at the club.
Several players have had plenty of game time since arriving at Ibrox over the summer, while others have had to be patient to get on the pitch, but heading into November there is no longer any room for settling.
To come into a club like Rangers is to envelope yourself as a player or a coach in a world of instant expectation. You’re coming into a powerhouse having been chosen to shift them in the right direction. To patter about in the first few months at such a huge club will see any individual found out.
This is why no excuses can be made if the Gers turn up at Pittodrie and get beaten. It almost renders the league season entirely obsolete and would put the Dons nine points clear of Clement’s side.
