'There is also...' - BBC journalist explains Rangers board desire for keeping Clement at Ibrox

Alasdair Lamont believes the Rangers board’s main “desire” for keeping Philippe Clement at Ibrox is to create “stability” after the club’s last few seasons of chopping and changing.

The future of the Belgian has been brought into the limelight on multiple occasions this term and yet, he’s still standing as Gers boss.

Writing for the BBC Sport website (13 November), Lamont shared what he thinks has kept the 50-year-old at the club this term.

“The European performances and results have surely helped keep Philippe Clement in a job, though clearly there is also a desire in the boardroom to instil a measure of stability rather than go through the expensive and difficult process of sacking and appointing managers on an annual basis,” he wrote.

“Clement must find a way of replicating the impressive European form on the domestic stage and try to eat into the nine-point lead of Celtic and Aberdeen between now and the turn of the year. That will be easier said than done, with neither of the league leaders looking like dropping points”.

Rangers and John Gilligan need to decide where their future is headed

Since the start of the season when the Gers dropped points to Hearts on the opening day of the Scottish Premiership, questions were already being asked about whether Clement had what it takes to mount a title charge against Celtic.

Things have been fairly topsy-turvy across the entirety of the 2024/25 campaign for the Gers thus far and fans deserve to be shown and given a lot more from their team.

While keeping Clement would help improve the stability at the club, the question still remains whether the Belgian is the right man for Rangers’ future.

The Gers are currently nine points adrift of both the Bhoys and Aberdeen and at the moment, it’s hard to see where either of their title rivals are going to drop points.

Only time will tell what the future holds and even though John Gilligan is just the interim chairman for now, at the moment, he’s the only one who can decide what to do in these sorts of situations.
