Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Arsenal are edging closer to a breach of Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) and subsequent points deduction.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted the Gunners will need to sell players before they bring any more talent to the Emirates Stadium.
As per Transfermarkt, Arsenal have spent around £66million on permanent deals for David Raya and Riccardo Califiori this summer.
The Gunners lost £52.1million in the 2022-23 campaign and their financial results for last season are yet to be revealed.
Under PSR, Premier League sides are only permitted to lose £105million before incurring punishment – such as a points deduction.
Everton and Nottingham Forest were docked points in the 2023-24 season after breaching the rules.
Arsenal need to sell to fund any late-window deals, says Wyness
Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “There’s still a couple of weeks to go in this window.
“I think Arsenal are closer to a breach than someone like West Ham, but there will be many deals being discussed. It’s something they’ll be looking at.
“I know in August, from my own experience, there will be 50-60 different formulas being discussed.
“It may be the case that incomings will have to come after outgoings.
“In the Arsenal war room, they’ll be looking three or four jumps ahead and we won’t be party to those conversations.
“I’m sure they’ll have plans to move players on, and I think they may well need to if they are to get the quality of player they want.”
