“This one is extra good” – Genk boss happy after Nigeria star’s brace secure first Beerschot win in 11 years

Racing Genk manager Thorsten Fink has hailed the club’s Tolu Arokodare-inspired victory at Beerschot – Genk’s first in more than a decade, Soccernet.ng reports.

After losing both of their last two trips to Beerschot with a 7-2 aggregate scoreline, Genk knew they would need to work hard for a positive result at the Olympisch Stadion in Antwerp on Sunday.

However, with Nigerian forward Tolu Arokodare in fine form, Genk were brimming with confidence.

Before kickoff, the 23-year-old had managed two goals in each of his last two games, including a crucial equaliser in a comeback 3-2 win over champions Club Brugge last week.

Arokodare did not disappoint as he bagged a brilliant race, including what turned out to be the winning goal as Genk secured an impressive 4-3 away win at Beerschot.

Coach Fink admits Genk’s defensive frailties need to be addressed but the gaffer was equally full of praise for his side’s attacking output that helped secure a historic win on a difficult ground.

“It’s been 11 years since we last managed to win at Beerschot,” Fink told Genk media.

“So this one is extra good. Also for the supporters who travelled with us. Everyone saw a good match from both teams today. In the beginning, we had a bad start, but we immediately believed in it and were able to respond with a few goals as a result.

“In the second half, it looked like a Hitchcock movie, especially with that red card. Defensively we occasionally dropped the ball. We will use the next two weeks to further sharpen the defensive principles. But for football, this was good advertising.”

Following a disappointing 3-1 loss at OH Leuven on matchday two, KRC Genk have now secured two straight victories and have climbed to the 5th position, three points behind leaders Anderlecht.
