'This Really Sticks Out To Me' - Ex-PL CEO: Newcastle could be in trouble as probe begins

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted Newcastle United will face “questions” about the transfer of Odysseas Vlachodimos from football’s powers.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed the 30-year-old is only worth between £7-10million.

Vlachodimos was signed by Newcastle from Nottingham Forest for a reported effective fee of £20million after factoring in Elliot Anderson’s £35million switch to the Midlands club.

The moves went through prior to the unofficial 30 June deadline after both clubs found themselves in difficult positions with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Forest signed Vlachodimos from Benfica in September 2023 for a reported £7.7million.

He made just seven appearances for the club, conceding 16 goals.

Newcastle face ‘questions’ about Vlachodimos move, says Wyness

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Of all the deals between the clubs swapping players recently, this is the one that sticks out to me.

“It’s a higher valuation than what would seem normal.

“It’s almost double. I thought somewhere between £7-10million would have been fair, but £20million is a real stretch.

“Elliot Anderson also cost a lot going the other way.

“If there are questions asked, it will be about this transfer.

Newcastle

“Hopefully Newcastle have got enough backup data to show his value because this is the transfer which stuck out to me.

“They could have a few questions to answer – and they may well be able to answer them.”

In other news, Newcastle could accept £20m Kieran Trippier bid.
