'Ticks all the boxes' - Pundit reacts as Rangers eye another new signing

Thomas Galdames seems to “tick all the boxes” of what Philippe Clement needs to upgrade his defence this summer, says Derek Ferguson.

Interest in the Chilean, who can play on the left or in the centre, after a move for Jose Cordoba broke down at an advanced stage, with a cut-price deal potentially on the cards as he has just six months left on his Godoy Cruz contract [Daily Record, 29 May].

Ex-Ibrox midfielder Ferguson is convinced the Light Blues need to add physicality to the back line, and is hopeful that a move for the 25-year-old would add that along with ability on the ball.

Galdames has himself admitted his “dream” is to play in Europe [Derek Clark, 6 June] and Ferguson has suggested bringing him would help overcome the disappointment after losing out on the Cordoba deal.

He exclusively told Ibrox News: “I’ve talked about physicality. Where he’s been playing his football he’ll be decent on the ball, a decent technical player. 

“But hopefully we’re bringing in guys with a strong mentality because we need winners in the door.

“So you’re disappointed in terms of you’re not getting one player in [Cordoba] but this boy seems to tick the boxes.

“But you never know until they’re through the door and they’re out the playing.”

Very little of the picture in the Gers defence is set in stone this summer, with only the newly re-signed Leon Balogun and perhaps John Souttar sure to be in place for next season along with the new arrivals.

Jefte has been brought in at left-back while fellow 20-year-old Clinton Nsiala has joined the centre-back options.

But Borna Barisic is already gone and Ridvan Yilmaz is again a target in Turkey [Sabah Spor, 10 June], while big names James Tavernier and Connor Goldson have been linked to Saudi Arabia [Daily Record, 24 April], while lesser-spotted defenders like Leon King and Ben Davies have also been tipped to move on.

Even if there are minimal further departures it seems likely that Clement and Nils Koppen will still need to add to the unit to overcome the lack of consistency which has plagued it in recent seasons.

In other Rangers news, a club has been left “very upset” after their player snubbed them to head for Ibrox.
