Tom English impressed by what he's seen from Rangers ace as wider worry shared

Tom English believes Scotland were “defensively sound” in their 2-1 loss against Croatia on Saturday (12 October) and singled out Rangers ace John Souttar for his “good” performance.

Steve Clarke’s men currently find themselves on a seven-game winless streak and have lost five of their last seven games across all competitions.

Souttar was likely called up to Scotland’s national team due to the injuries Clarke’s men have sustained and, although he put in a good performance, English shared his wider worries about Grant Hanley due to his lack of game time for his club.

“They had to be defensively sound and I think for the large part they were,” English said on the Scottish Football Podcast (14 October).

“I was worried about Grant Hanley because he hasn’t played much club football at all – I thought he was solid.

“I thought Souttar was good. I thought they were competitive, you know? They were in the game”.

John Souttar has been stellar for Rangers this season

In general, the Gers’ season so far has been fairly poor. Philippe Clement’s men currently sit third in the Scottish Premiership and were knocked out of the Champions League in the qualifying rounds.

While third place in the Scottish Premiership isn’t the be-all and end-all, for a team of Rangers’ calibre, it’s miles off the pace.

Clement’s future was under scrutiny due to their poor start to the campaign and although John Gilligan has since publicly backed him on Sky Sports (24 September), it still feels like he could be putting in more work.

Indeed, there’s still plenty of time for things to turn around and, as the season goes on, the Gers could find themselves closing the gap to the top spot.

As long as Souttar continues his form for the Gers and further solidifies his partnership with £2.7million summer arrival Robin Propper, there’s no reason why Clement’s men should be counted out of the title race just yet [Daily Record, 31 July].
