Tony Bellew compared Dwight McNeil to Lionel Messi following his brace in Everton versus Crystal Palace on Saturday (28 September).
The 24-year-old was in fine form as the Toffees came from a goal down to secure their first victory of the new Premier League season, lifting them out of the relegation zone.
Following a poor opening 45 minutes, with Marc Guehi putting the visitors ahead at Goodison Park, McNeil turned the game on its head with two superbly taken strikes in a 2-1 win.
Reacting to McNeil’s Instagram post on Saturday (28 September), Bellew wrote: “DwightMcMessi,” with clapping and blue heart emojis.

Sean Dyche was in desperate need of one of his players to step up and rescue the Toffees, with the team winless after the opening five matches of the new league season.
Of course, Dyche’s side is far from safe, only going one point above the Eagles in the dreaded dropzone, and the manager will not be getting too comfortable after a multitude of calls for his sacking.
The Merseyside club have multiple key fixtures in the coming weeks, with opportunities to build on their recent win against fellow strugglers Ipswich Town, Southampton and West Ham.
Dyche’s main issue has been the number of goals conceded, especially during the dramatic 3-2 defeats to Aston Villa and Bournemouth, but Jarrad Branthwaite’s return from injury has come as a huge boost.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin has already hit the ground running, netting twice and assisting another in his opening six appearances while McNeil already has five goal contributions.
Evertonians will hope this win is just a sign of things to come in their final season at Goodison Park, rather than another long campaign of fighting off the risk of relegation.
McNeil’s brace could be the precise moment the Toffees’s season kicks into gear, with another 32 matches to get as far up the Premier League table as possible.
