Man City are holding talks with Ilkay Gundogan’s agent in England on Wednesday over a sensational late-window deal, sources have told Football Insider.
City are ready to offer the German midfielder a potential two-year deal to make a return to the Etihad Stadium.
The contract offered will be a one-year deal plus a 12-month option, and the Premier League giants are willing to match Gundogan’s £300,000-a-week Barcelona contract.
Pep Guardiola has given the go-ahead for the deal, and Gundogan is believed to prefer a City return over a potential move to Saudi Arabia or Galatasaray.
The 33-year-old left City for Barcelona in 2023 on a free transfer after he captained the side to their historic treble.
Barcelona’s financial issues have opened the door for Gundogan to return to the Premier League, despite the fact he’s under contract at Camp Nou until 2026.
Man City will look to replicate past success with Ilkay Gundogan
Gundogan initially joined City in 2016 for £20million from Borussia Dortmund and went on to be a pivotal figure in Guardiola’s team.
The versatile midfielder made 304 appearances for the club, scoring 60 goals and providing 38 assists.
Gundogan won 14 trophies throughout his seven years in England, which he will now be looking to replicate this season.
Although one of Guardiola’s success stories is set to return to the Etihad, another is getting ready to depart.
In other news, Man City close in on two forward signings, one deal agreed.
