Darren Bent believes Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin had “no idea” what to do before his clear-cut chance against Aston Villa.
The Everton star scored a glancing header in the 3-2 defeat at Villa Park but missed a couple of gilt-edged chances to take some points back to Goodison Park.
Calvert-Lewin was one-on-one with Emiliano Martinez and decided to try to go around him and failed, rather than backing himself and going for goal.
Speaking live on talkSPORT (16 September, 5:46), Bent shared what Calvert-Lewin might have had going off in his head.
“I think when he’s going through there [Calvert-Lewin] he has no idea what he’s going to do until the last minute,” he said.
“When he makes that decision to go around him, I think he has all these different things going through his head and when he makes a decision, it’s too late”.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin could be replaced at Everton
Calvert-Lewin has led Everton’s attack for many seasons now but in recent years, his form has been far from its best.
The striker has chipped in with a few goals here and there and his injuries also need to be taken into account but, after his horrendous miss against Villa, his time in Merseyside feels like it’s running out.
Armando Broja was brought in on deadline day and while he isn’t yet fit to start for the Toffees, once he makes his return to fitness, it would be a surprise to not see him getting a look in for the number nine role.
On his day, Calvert-Lewin can be one of the league’s best strikers and that was shown by the interest in the attacker towards the end of the transfer window with both Chelsea and Arsenal being mooted as potential destinations [Caught Offside].
The 27-year-old’s contract expires at the end of the 2024/25 season, with no talks yet to be held regarding a renewal.
Should Broja get his Toffees career off to a good start, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him joining Sean Dyche’s men permanently next term.
In other Everton news, Sean Dyche may regret selling a Toffees ace in the summer after what he did for his new club.
