'Optimistic' - Gary Lineker makes new Everton relegation admission after loss v Aston Villa

Gary Lineker has admitted he doesn’t want to see either Everton or Leicester City relegated from the Premier League this season.

The Toffees currently sit bottom of the Premier League table without a single point this season after they let a two-goal lead slip to lose 3-2 to Aston Villa at Villa Park on Saturday (14 September).

Leicester currently sit 15th after five games with just two points and while things aren’t looking good for either of Lineker’s former sides, he remains confident they will have enough to dodge the drop this season.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football (16 September, 43:30) he said: “I’m going to be optimistic, I’m not going to say Leicester are going to go down.

“At the same time, I’m thinking if I don’t say Leicester, who else do I say? Everton? I don’t want to say Everton either because I played for them.”

Will Everton be relegated from the Premier League at Goodison Park?

Although almost every pundit and supporter appears to have been disappointed with the Toffees’ start to the season, most remain confident that the Blues will have enough to avoid relegation to the Championship.

While results have been nowhere near good enough at Goodison Park, there have been signs within performances that the tide could shift sooner rather than later under the management of Dyche.

Had the Toffees taken their chances against Villa, they could have quite easily come away with at least a point, but a combination of poor finishing and mistakes at the back came back to bite the Blues in the end.

If Everton had managed to hold on against Bournemouth before the international break and even just claimed a point against Villa, they’d be sitting pretty in the middle of the table and no one would even be talking about relegation.

Hopefully, the Toffees will add that finishing touch to their performances and begin to climb their way up the table in the coming weeks.
