Chris Sutton has criticised Sean Dyche’s negative comments on Dominic Calvert-Lewin after Everton lost 3-2 to Aston Villa on Saturday (14 September).

The striker missed a golden opportunity to restore the two-goal advantage after Ollie Watkins got Villa back into the game, squandering a one-on-one chance with Emi Martinez.

Instead, Watkins’ second goal and a stunner from Jhon Duran saw Dyche’s side condemned to a second consecutive 3-2 comeback defeat, and the manager was rather honest about the missed chance.

Speaking via the It’s All Kicking Off podcast on Monday (16 September), Sutton said: “How does Dominic Calvert-Lewin feel that the manager has hung him out to dry?

“Strikers miss chances, but it was actually a brilliant move from Everton – quick, sharp passing, timing of the run was excellent. He just couldn’t make his mind up quickly enough.

“His touch was so straight that it allowed Martinez to get his angles right, who was brilliant for not committing. Calvert-Lewin had to make a decision, deciding to go around Martinez, before brilliant last-ditch defending from Ezri Konsa.

“Sean Dyche is absolutely telling the truth, but sometimes it’s wise not to hang your star striker out to dry.”

Dyche certainly makes a good point when it comes to his star striker, though it may not have been the right decision to share his comments quite so publicly.

While Calvert-Lewin had several chances to hit the back of the net, even smacking the crossbar with 10 minutes remaining, the blame cannot solely be placed on his shoulders.

For the second game in a row, the Toffees have thrown a two-goal lead away to leave with zero points, which sees them stuck at the bottom of the Premier League table after four matches.

Considering how many chances the 27-year-old missed last season, it comes as no surprise to see him missing more this term, but the rest of the team and the manager must take a portion of the blame too.

To concede six goals in two games is already bad enough, but the manner of how it happened is appalling, and while some may see it as unfair, the blame eventually lands at the feet of Dyche.

The manager is coming under a lot of pressure despite keeping the Toffees safe last season, and he could be running out of time to turn the team’s fortunes around on this occasion.
