'Big Influence' - Pundit issues verdict after Rangers keeper rejects English exit & signs new deal

Philippe Clement is the main reason why Rangers goalkeeper Mason Munn decided his future is at Ibrox this summer, according to Derek Ferguson.

The club confirmed on 26 June that the Northern Irishman had extended his deal to 2028, with David Edgar of Heart & Hand Podcast reacting to the news via X to report that there had been offers available to leave for England.

Former Gers midfielder Ferguson is a big fan of “class act” Clement and feels the Belgian will have had a big influence on Munn staying.

But in the midst of a frustrating half-finished transfer overhaul he regrets the fact the manager hasn’t been able to do all the business he wanted.

He exclusively told Ibrox News: “I think the reason he’s decided his future lies at Rangers comes down to the manager.

“The manager would have been a big influence. He’s obviously had a good look at him and likes the boy.

“That can make such a difference. You can be swayed by the riches or the money down south. But he’s still to develop and I think that’s why he’s maybe stayed there.

“And he’s maybe been told he’s going to get his opportunity because the way it’s going with Rangers. We’ve got a lot of dead wood in there at the moment.

“So these young guys that we all think might be projects they might be in the first team a lot sooner than you realise.

“I think it’s down to the manager. It’s just my opinion but I think he’s a real class act.

“And that’s why I feel a wee bit sorry for him because he’s not been allowed to bring in the calibre of player that he wants to.

“He’s tried to get these young guys, keep them happy, keep them motivated. And if they’re up to it I’m sure he’ll them their opportunity.”

Mason Munn signed Rangers contract extension to 2028.

Mason Munn signed new Rangers deal to stay at Ibrox

The Light Blues saw a host of goalkeepers leave Ibrox on permanent or loan deals this summer so teenager Munn has bucked the trend by staying.

Jon McLaughlin’s contract expired and Robby McCrorie finally made a permanent move away to join Kilmarnock, before youngster Jacob Pazikas joined Stranraer on loan and Jay Hogarth made a temporary switch to Queen of the South.

Amid long-term speculation that star number one Jack Butland could head back to England if a big offer of more than £10million came in [Chris Jack, 4 June] there might have even been a risk of the first-team being left short despite the return of Liam Kelly after his Motherwell exit.

But Munn is now listed as a member of the senior squad after impressing and looks to have a big future at Ibrox.

In other Rangers news, a Light Blues ace is now wanted to kickstart the season after the manager was sacked.
