Report: Arsenal now considering £43m January bid for 'clinical' South American-born forward

Arsenal dropped more points in the Premier League at Chelsea and with the January window coming into view, the Gunners will be wondering if they can improve the squad once again.

Mikel Arteta has been backed to the hilt by the Gunners board and spent big in the summer again to sign the likes of Mikel Merino and Riccardo Calafiori.

However, they once again failed to land a striker and with Gabriel Jesus again failing to fire this season, they are being left a touch exposed.

Indeed, Micah Richards has again suggested that a lack of striker is killing Arsenal right now and he’s told them to sign a poacher.

And according to CaughtOffside, that’s exactly what Arsenal could be about to do.

Arsenal considering January bid for Mateo Retegui

According to the report from CaughtOffside, Arsenal are drawing up potential options for the January window and Mateo Retegui has been mentioned.

Retegui, 25, is emerging as one of Europe’s most prolific strikers after a goal-laden time with Atalanta so far this season.

The Argentina born forward has already smashed in 11 goals for the Italian side and has represented Italy 16 times as well, despite his South American roots.

Arsenal are believed to be considering Retegui as a ‘plan B’ type option as they weigh up potential January moves.

The Gunners have been playing Kai Havertz as their main man up top but as with last season, are lacking a real number nine in certain games.

Retegui is a ‘clinical’ striker flying in Italy

There has to be an element of caution on strikers coming from Serie A, as we’ve seen a few over the years not deliver.

The likes of Gianluca Scamacca have failed to produce, while looking further back players like Massimo Maccarone and Dani Osvaldo have flopped as well.

Still, Retegui is clearly doing something right and has been lauded for his finishing.

“He is the top scorer in Serie A this season. A cold and clinical finisher inside the area, with tremendous timing. He rises high above centre-backs to offer Atalanta a lethal aerial threat, but also likes to come wide, taking full backs on and whipping in dangerous crosses,” Sports Gazette recently wrote.

Indeed, it seems like if Arsenal do want a very different option, then Retegui could be their man.
