Melissa Lawley picked up an injury in the Everton v Liverpool women’s pre-season friendly on 15 September, according to manager Brian Sorensen.
Speaking to the club’s official website, the Toffees’ head coach claimed that the 30-year-old midfielder will be checked if it is anything more than a knock.
The injury is understood to be sustained on her elbow and nothing has been mentioned as to whether or not she will be available for the season’s opener against Brighton on 21 September.
Sorensen said: “Before the game we knew where we were with the team, physically. We didn’t want to take any chances on anyone and also we have a lot from the bench that are ready also to come in.
“I think first half, we were in control and it’s about picking those moments where we can hurt them.
“We got through it without any injuries or anything. We got to see Mel. She got a knock on her elbow but hopefully that’s just a knock and nothing more.”
Everton will be hoping to have Melissa Lawley firing on all cylinders
The Toffees will be hoping the 30-year-old’s elbow injury is merely a minor knock because her presence is crucial for their upcoming season in the Women’s Super League.
Lawley, known for her versatility and effectiveness in midfield, brings a dynamic edge to their play, both in defence and attack.
Her ability to control the tempo of the game, coupled with her experience from previous seasons with Liverpool, where she played a pivotal role in their strategies, makes her an invaluable asset.
If sidelined for an extended period, Everton could face challenges in maintaining squad depth and tactical flexibility, especially against tough opponents like Brighton in the season opener.
Fans and the coaching staff are banking on her quick recovery to ensure she can contribute fully, leveraging her skills to help the club secure favourable results and maintain a competitive stance in the league.
It remains to be seen just where they end up and there is hope that the performances will be a lot better than last season after adding to their ranks in the summer.
