'Too much money' - King reacts as Tottenham hold talks to sign PL defender in January

Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite has been linked with a move to Tottenham ahead of January.

According to The Mail on Sunday (29 December, page 89), Spurs have discussed a deal to sign Branthwaite in the January transfer window.

Ange Postecoglou is currently without several first-team defenders, with Destiny Udogie facing up to six weeks on the sidelines after becoming the most recent Spurs player to suffer a hamstring injury. Therefore, it would make sense that Branthwaite would be a target.

However, ex-Spurs scout Bryan King – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – doesn’t think that the 22-year-old is good enough for the club.

“I wouldn’t fancy Branthwaite at Spurs,” King said.

“Not when you’ve got two of the best centre-backs in the Premier League. Branthwaite is not the answer for Tottenham, certainly not. He is not the solution and he would cost too much money.”

Tottenham to sign Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite in January?

Branthwaite isn’t the only player Everton and Tottenham might be discussing a deal for this January.

However, it wasn’t too long ago that the centre-back was being linked with a big-money move to Manchester United. As a result, he might prove too expensive for Tottenham.

While he would be an interesting signing, it is hard to see how the Everton man gets into Postecoglou’s team ahead of Cristian Romero or Micky van de Ven.

Therefore, it doesn’t make much sense for Spurs to spend big money on a player who would simply be acting as a stopgap until Romero and van de Ven return.

However, if one of Romero or van de Ven were to leave, then a move for Branthwaite might make sense.
