Troy Parrott has revealed that Tottenham sold him just three weeks into the pre-season despite impressing on loan last term.
The 22-year-old is set to return to Spurs with AZ Alkmaar as Ange Postecoglou’s side prepare to host the Eredivisie outfit in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday (24 October).
Parrott’s seven-year association with the North London club came to an end after they offloaded him to AZ for £6.7million in the summer (Nizaar Kinsella). This was despite the Ireland international shining on loan at Excelsior last season with 17 goals and five assists in 32 games across all competitions.
Speaking to Dutch daily De Telegraaf (24 October) ahead of the Europa League clash, he said he returned to Enfield as usual in the summer, but was shown the door three weeks later.
“After three weeks [of pre-season at Enfield], a transfer to AZ came about and I left again”, Parrott said.
Parrott, though, added that he has no hard feelings towards Tottenham, saying: “I actually have nothing bad to say about the club. It wasn’t meant to be that I broke through there.
“Now my own journey has begun. I’m on my own journey.”
Tottenham could regret letting Troy Parrott go
Tottenham’s decision to offload Parrott could come back to haunt them. It might even happen sooner than expected as the AZ frontman now has an opportunity to prove a point in front of the Spurs faithful in the Europa League.
Paul Robinson has already told Tottenham News that the young striker could be on the scoresheet at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The Irishman could not prevent Excelsior from dropping down to the second division, but his numbers showed great promise. With Dominic Solanke netting just thrice this season and Richarlison struggling with fitness issues, one can only wonder if Parrott might have had a rare chance to impress if he was still at the club.
He has found the back of the net five times in nine league appearances for AZ this season and also netted once in their 3-2 Europa League win against Elfsborg on 25 September.
However, with Spurs selling him just three weeks into pre-season, it is evident that he was not in Postecoglou’s plans.
In other Tottenham news, this Spurs player could be on his way out of the club in January with negotiations already underway.
