Tottenham have agreed a priority option to sign Real Betis youngster Johnny Cardoso, according to Tom Bogert.
The Give Me Sport journalist reported via X on Friday (30 August) that Ange Postecoglou’s side have ensured that they will have the first opportunity to sign the 22-year-old in future transfer windows.
Spurs will have to pay a reported £25.3million fixed fee if they decide to bring the midfielder to North London in the future.
Spurs will also agree on a deal with the Spanish club to pocket a percentage of any fee received for the American in the future if they do not decide to take him off of Betis’ hands [Fabrizio Romano, 30 August].
The agreement between the two clubs has come as part of the deal which will see Giovani Lo Celso return to Spain before the transfer window slams shut on Friday 30 August.
Are Tottenham close to any new transfers ahead of the deadline?
While this is not the sort of business most Spurs fans would have been hoping to see in the final hours of the summer transfer window, this seems like an incredibly sensible piece of business from Tottenham that could help them in the future.
Cardoso has impressed when he has featured for Betis both in La Liga and in European fixtures and there is a genuine belief that the midfielder could go on to have an impressive career if he manages to kick on in the future.
While he isn’t yet at the level needed to slot into Postecoglou’s side’s midfield on a regular basis, the Lilywhites have basically guaranteed that they could sign the 22-year-old in the future if he continues to develop as expected.
Even if the United States international doesn’t quite manage to reach the rights required for Spurs, Daniel Levy has now ensured that they will benefit from any sale Betis make thanks to the sell-on clause included in the deal.
It may not be the most exciting development for the final day of the transfer window, but it could prove to be very a clever decision from the powers at be in North London.
