Gabby Agbonlahor believes the controversy surrounding Rangers versus Celtic was not as clear-cut as many have claimed.

Vaclav Cerny was not awarded a penalty after being brought down on the line of the penalty area during the Scottish League Cup final on Sunday 15 December, a decision that the Scottish FA have since apologised for.

The SFA have been absolutely slated for their comments on the situation, with officials Alan Muir and Frank O’Connor already being axed from the weekend’s Scottish Premiership fixture list.

Speaking live via talkSPORT [19 December, 6:06am], Agbonlahor said: “It looked right on the line. His body looked to be on the left-hand side of the line but the shirt pull was on the line.

“It was a tough one, wasn’t it? Great game though, amazing. It was so end-to-end. That’s what you want to see as a neutral, Rangers and Celtic going head-to-head.”

Rangers controversy v Celtic is not going away anytime soon

Agbonlahor is clearly trying to play Devil’s Advocate – all fans know that a spot-kick should have been awarded when Cerny was brought down on the line of the penalty area.

The decision is likely to have changed the course of the result, a game which eventually saw the Hoops lift the title after a thrilling 3-3 draw in normal time before extra time and penalties were needed.

Ridvan Yilmaz was the one to miss the decisive spot-kick for Philippe Clement’s men, though much has already been said about Cyriel Dessers not stepping up to the pressure before Jack Butland.

While the ongoing feud between the fanbase and the SFA continues, Clement and his staff will already be shifting their focus to the next game, with Dundee at Ibrox up next on Saturday 21 December.

There is still quite some time until their next Europa League clash, facing Manchester United at Old Trafford on 23 January, but if they put on a similar display, it could be another good night in Europe.

In other Rangers news, Keith Jackson was left shocked after what he saw ahead of Rangers v Celtic at Hampden Park.
