TV pundit Johan Derksen has laid into Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, singling him out for what he did during England’s Euro 2024 clash with Slovakia.

Speaking on Today Inside Oranje, as per The Express [3 July], Derksen branded Pickford “terrible” and claimed he belonged in an “amateur club”.

That came in response to Pickford celebrating in front of supporters late on in the 2-1 extra-time win over Slovakia after pouncing on a loose ball.

Pickford has conceded just twice in 390 minutes of football so far at the tournament ahead of Saturday’s (6 July) quarter-final for the Three Lions against Switzerland in Dusseldorf.

The pundit appeared less than impressed with the Toffees stopper’s demeanour whilst live on air.

“What really bothers me about that team is that terrible Everton goalkeeper,” Derksen said. “A goalkeeper with sagging socks, who looks like a goalkeeper from the sixth team of an amateur club.”

Derksen went on to add: “He’s been behaving like this all year for Everton.”

Everton man Jordan Pickford bizarrely vilified for England behaviour

Somewhere between unnecessary at best and downright appalling at worst, lies this bizarre onslaught on Pickford emanating from the Netherlands.

Having performed as a borderline buoyancy aid to Everton amid chaotic times both on and off the pitch since 2017, the 30-year-old goalkeeper will line up for his 66th senior cap this weekend in the Euro quarter-finals.

Derksen embarked on a humble domestic career in his homeland between 1966 and 1977, before venturing full-time into sports media. He did not appear for the Netherlands at any level.

Everton
Jordan Pickford has been a consistent presence for both Everton and England for years

Whilst Pickford admittedly had little to do in the dramatic last-16 win over Slovakia in Gelsenkirchen last weekend, and was nearly caught out by a shot from distance whilst England trailed, his celebration in the dying seconds while laid down in possession of the ball was one endearingly reflecting the English relief, as opposed to any malicious or inappropriate antics.

Regardless of what anyone may think of his ability at the top level, Pickford’s consistent presence for both Everton and England brings a reassurance that cannot be underestimated, and will be missed when it’s gone.
