Sam Lammers is a good player but he “couldn’t handle” the pressure of playing for Rangers so a permanent exit makes sense for both sides, says Derek Ferguson.

The Light Blues have decided to sell the Dutchman after he boosted his value with a highly-successful loan with FC Utrecht over the second half of last season, and are now hoping to make a profit [Rangers Review, 29 May].

His 11 goals in 20 games for the Eredivisie side far surpassed his two from 31 in Scotland and has sparked interest in a move from both Utretcht and FC Twente among others.

And Ferguson believes the club cashing in on a player who didn’t look suited to the rigours of life at Ibrox, while giving the 27-year-old a fresh start elsewhere, is a “win-win” this summer.

Ferguson exclusively told Ibrox News: “He couldn’t handle it. He couldn’t handle everything that goes with playing for Rangers Football Club, it’s as simple as that.

“Sam Lammers is a good football player. He’s a good technician, he’s proven that when he’s went away on loan and scored a few goals.

“But where he’s been plying his trade doesn’t come with the same pressure.

“Sometimes people tend to overlook it, it’s massive playing for a Rangers or a Celtic, and unfortunately for Sam he didn’t handle it too well, didn’t handle the pressure.

“If Rangers can make a few bob out of it, make a bit of money, and Sam can go and enjoy playing his football it’s a win-win isn’t it?

“I think it was never going to be a case of Sam Lammers coming back to Rangers.

“We’d all seen it with our own eyes that he’s a decent football player but mentally couldn’t handle it.”

Philippe Clement could see Rangers budget boosted by sale

Sam Lammers thrived back in the Netherlands after leaving Rangers on loan.

In terms of players who Philippe Clement would be happy to let go Lammers is likely close to the top of the list, so the fact that he could bring in a decent fee is a major positive.

The manager needs all the budget he can muster to restock a Gers squad which threw away so much of their good work last term late in the campaign to lose out on the Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup to Celtic.

Lammers himself has done an admirable job in battling back from such a difficult half-season in Glasgow, and while it is a shame he couldn’t do so for the Light Blues he could still bring a big benefit to the club via a transfer.

In other Rangers news, another Ibrox attacker has been offered a surprise exit route after claiming he wanted to leave.
