UEFA is “ready to hammer” Rangers after supporters set off fireworks inside Ibrox during the 4-1 loss to Lyon, according to the Scottish Sun.
The news outlet reported on their website [4 October] that match delegate Johny Vanspauwen has submitted his report to UEFA with the incident as the main talking point in the report.
Rangers will learn their fate upon the return of club football after the international break with a partial stadium ban on the cards for the next Europa League fixture, the Sun wrote.
Rangers are in serious trouble with UEFA
Referee Svan Jablonski was forced to halt proceedings during the first half as the fireworks exploded overhead and smoke spread onto the pitch.
UEFA sanctioned Swiss side Servette for a similar incident in August during their Europa Conference League play-off tie against Chelsea.
Servette received a £36,000 fine and a section of the Stade de Geneve will be closed should the side qualify for European competition next season.
Only two matches after the re-opening, Rangers will fear facing the prospect of welcoming Steaua București to Ibrox on 24 October with a partial stadium closure.
The small section of Rangers supporters have turned what was already a miserable night for the club into an even more miserable evening, the world-renowned atmosphere within Ibrox was supposed to drive the side to greater heights not burden the club.
It is the last thing anyone wanted to be talking about on a night where the Gers were outclassed on the pitch. The focus should be on how to get this side firing, not matters in the stands.
