'Killing us' - David Edgar left fuming after what he noticed from Rangers this week

Rangers suffered a 4-1 defeat against Lyon and Heart and Hand podcast host David Edgar was left fuming at the display.

He took to X on 3 October during the Europa League clash at Ibrox to slam the players for giving the ball way in their own half without any real pressure.

Philippe Clement’s side are set to take on St Johnstone in the SPFL on Sunday, 6 October.

Edgar wrote: “Our habit of giving the ball away in our own half under no pressure is killing us.”

Philippe Clement may need to tweak the Rangers system to get the best out of the players

A fundamentally sound team is characterised by their ability to maintain possession, particularly in less pressured situations and one cannot say that about this current Gers side.

The recurring error Edgar points out suggests a lack of either discipline or coaching emphasis on ball retention, essential for controlling the game’s tempo and reducing risk.

Clement’s approach might need reevaluation; perhaps the system he’s employing doesn’t match the players’ strengths or the tactical demands of modern football where possession and smart ball movement are key.

To extract the best from his squad, the Belgian might consider adapting his system, focusing more on possession-based play or adjusting player roles to suit a more secure, possession-oriented style, thereby mitigating the risky giveaways that have become a hallmark of this team.

They will get past most teams in Scotland given the gulf there is between the two Glasgow clubs and the rest of the league, but games against Celtic and tricky ones in Europe show just how much work is still left to be done for Clement.

In other Rangers news, a first-team player now has three months left to fight for his future at Ibrox or he could be sold.
