'He is done' - Tam McManus tears into Rangers man after what he did in loss v Lyon

James Tavernier is “done” at Rangers after what happened in the Europa League defeat to Lyon, according to Tam McManus.

Philippe Clement’s side slipped to a disappointing 4-1 loss at Ibrox on Thursday (3 October) with Tom Lawrence’s first-half strike proving to be little more than a consolation in the grand scheme of things.

Tavernier was rightly slammed for losing his man as Malick Fofana tapped in Lyon’s fourth goal at the back post and McManus was quick to suggest that incident should spell the end for the skipper at Ibrox.

Writing on X on Thursday (3 October) he said: “He is done mate.”

What has happened to Rangers captain James Tavernier at Ibrox?

It has become all too common an occurrence in Glasgow that a forward has been left alone to tap home at the back post while Tavernier has been left to watch on in no-man’s land having failed to track his runner.

While very few players in Clement’s side could leave the field after Thursday night’s defeat with their heads held high, the Gers skipper showed exactly why he cannot be allowed to start each and every week.

Tavernier can still be an effective player, particularly in possession, against some of the weaker sides faced in domestic competition. But in European and Old Firm games, wingers run rings around the Englishman week in and week out.

Something needs to change and quickly, otherwise, the Gers skipper is going to keep costing his side in the biggest matches. Maybe the time has come for him to be rotated out when the big teams come to Ibrox.

Dujon Sterling is waiting in the wings and is more than deserving of his chance to play regularly at right-back.
