Lilywhite Rose: Tottenham ace could earn first senior int'l call-up after recent performances

Tottenham defender Djed Spence could soon find himself in the first-team picture for England.

Spence has started Spurs’ last two matches, his first two starts for the club since joining two and a half years ago, with Gabby Agbonlahor impressed by the 24-year-old’s most recent display in the 4-3 Carabao Cup quarter-final victory over Manchester United at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Thursday [19 December].

While at one point it looked as though a Premier League loan move was on the cards ahead of January, with Nottingham Forest being tipped as a potential destination, it seems as though Spence has turned things around and established himself as an important player in Ange Postecoglou’s squad.

And according to Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham, who was speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, if the full-back keeps working hard, he could soon find himself on Thomas Tuchel’s radar.

“I don’t think it would take much for Spence to earn an England call-up,” Wenham said.

“Especially if he continues to impress at left-back. Luke Shaw is constantly unavailable and there isn’t anyone else in the England squad who seems to be nailing down that position as their own.

“Therefore, it looks as though there is a real space for someone, and Spence could take that space if he continues to feature at left-back and keeps working hard.”

Tottenham ace Djed Spence to earn England call-up?

If Spence were to end up featuring for England this season off the back of some impressive form for Tottenham, it would be one of the most remarkable turnarounds for a Premier League player perhaps ever.

Since joining the club Spence has been out on loan three times and had to wait more than two years to make his first starts. Therefore, in the summer, it looked as though his Spurs career was over.

However, credit to the player, he has stuck around and has now made himself a real option in the first-team.

Postecoglou’s recent update on Destiny Udogie could spell trouble for Spence.

However, as long as he continues performing as he is, the Spurs boss will have no choice but to continue playing him.
