Vaclav Cerny speaks out on Rangers pressure ahead of Malmo showdown

Vaclav Cerny believes there is “constant pressure” at Rangers ahead of their Europa League opener against Malmo.

Rangers face the Swedish side on 26 September and will be looking to come out of the game winners ahead of their domestic clash with Hibernian on Sunday (29 September).

Cerny admitted that it is time to go step-by-step at Ibrox with the squad fighting to lift silverware consistently.

Speaking to the Daily Record, Cerny shared that the Gers are just taking their games one at a time.

“You always feel the pressure to perform, and that’s good. We know that, so we just keep on going, we just keep on working hard together and getting there step by step,” he said.

“It is similar [here to Ajax], so it’s good to know how it feels to be in a club that demands a lot. Fans, the club itself, you need to play for trophies and you want that as well as a player, and we all realise that.

“So it’s good to have literally everyone on board and to understand the things we want to achieve. Obviously clubs like Ajax, they want to win titles every single year, and that’s more than normal. As I said, there is a constant pressure, but that’s a good thing also.

“We don’t have to make it bigger than it is, so it’s just up to us to focus. It sounds really cliché, but it’s just going step by step and achieving those things.”

Rangers take on Malmo in the Europa League

Rangers currently find themselves third in the Scottish Premiership after a below-par start to their 2024/25 season.

While third place wouldn’t be something to be frowned upon for most other teams, with the expectations the Gers set themselves, they’ll be disappointed with their recent results.

Philippe Clement’s future has been brought into question because of the form and although John Gilligan has been “very impressed” with the Belgian [Heart and Hand, 23 September], things can change in an instant.

The Ibrox outfit has managed to get back to winning ways recently but things can still be improved.

Clement’s men will be looking to make an impact on Europe this season and will no doubt be wanting to make the knockout stages.

The Gers currently only have a 26.4 per cent chance of making it past the league stage according to Opta’s supercomputer [24 September] so it’s likely that the club will have to defy the odds to make it through.

Obviously, the club will be up for the challenge but only time will tell if they manage to make it.
