Van Nistelrooy will 'revive surprise forgotten Leicester star after Brentford'

Luke Thomas may have given his Leicester City career the boost it needed despite his side’s 4-1 thrashing at Brentford.

In what was their first match since the appointment of Ruud van Nistelrooy as manager the Foxes were humbled in the capital on Saturday (30th November).

But one apparent positive from that game for the Dutchman, who was watching on from the stands at The Brentford Community Stadium, was the performance of Thomas.

In his first Premier League appearance of the season the left-back found himself facing up against the in-form Bryan Mbeumo, and pulled out an “excellent” performance in keeping the Brentford attacker quiet according to David Nugent.

Speaking on co-commentary on BBC Radio Leicester (16:46), the one-time England international said: “I think he’s been pretty poor this afternoon, Bryan Mbeumo.

“I think Luke Thomas has done an excellent job in keeping him quiet, you know coming into the team.”

In the circumstances, it appears that from a personal perspective this performance may well have come at the perfect time for the 23-year-old.

Forgotten Leicester ace impresses against Bryan Mbeumo

It has been a challenging period of late for Thomas, who endured disappointing loan spells with Sheffield United and Middlesbrough last season.

Having returned to his parent club in the summer things did not get any easier, with the left-back not making a Premier League appearance prior to Saturday’s match (30th November) during the campaign.

But with Thomas impressing in defeat against Brentford, he does have the chance to get his Leicester career back on track under Van Nistelrooy.

Nugent would go on to note that with the exception of substitute Stephy Mavididi, Thomas was the only positive for the Foxes from that game, with many players frustrating with their performances.

The new manager is surely going to be looking for sources of hope to build focus on as he looks to pull his side clear of the relegation zone, and some won’t have boosted their future prospects in the same way.

Newcastle
Bryan Mbeumo didn’t have his usual impact up against Luke Thomas for Leicester.

On the basis of this match Thomas is one of the few he can do that with, meaning the 23-year-old may be in a strong position to keep his place, once Van Nistelrooy takes full control.

If he continues to play in that way it will be hard for the new Leicester boss to consider dropping him, giving him the run of games he needs to get his career going back in the right direction.

An impressive performance against a top Premier League attacker in Mbuemo, who is understood to be attracting interest from the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal, is positive in itself, but from a player who isn’t tainted by the previous top flight struggles it looks even better for him personally.

Thomas therefore, should now also have some confidence that he can continue in that vein of form going forward.

With that in mind, Thomas may have just taken a massive opportunity when it comes to his future at Leicester City.
