Andy Newport believes that Mohamed Diomande’s form for Rangers has “vanished” this season.

The midfielder has been a constant figure within Philippe Clement’s team this term with the Ivory Coast international making 19 appearances across all competitions thus far.

Speaking on the Daily Record’s Hotline Live (27 November), Newport shared his thoughts on the way that Diomande has performed this season.

“Look at Mohammed Diomande, there was so much expected of him when he came in last January for £4.5million and he was absolutely a mile off the pace at the weekend,” he said.

“I think somebody like him you can go well what’s happened there because when he first came in, he got those couple of goals against Hearts and St. Johnstone.

“There have been spells where he has looked like a real prospect but his form has vanished.”

Rangers need Mohamed Diomande to get back up to scratch soon

In almost every game of football, the midfield battle is one of the most important aspects of the clash.

The Gers shipped off a couple of their midfield stalwarts in the summer such as John Lundstram and Ryan Jack which resulted in Clement bringing in some younger talent to replace them.

Connor Barron was the main central midfield arrival in the summer, while Diomande arrived last January on loan-to-buy deal that cost Rangers £4.5million.

Rangers have performed well below par this season and have, more often than not, left a lot to be desired when playing.

Their European form, however, has been a sight to behold with many fans likely wishing that sort of form could carry over to the Scottish Premiership so they could at least put up a challenge for the title.

Unless Diomande can get his act together soon, it feels like most of the burden will fall upon the shoulders of Barron, which, for someone who’s just 22 years old, is a lot of pressure to carry.

In other Rangers news, a BBC journalist is torn over whether Philippe Clement should be sacked or not.
